Randomized controlled trials are the optimal means of assessing the efficacy of new treatments. This report reviews the methodology of clinical trials in inflammatory bowel disease using examples from recent randomized trials of therapy for Crohn's disease and other gastrointestinal diseases to show key principles. Guidelines for the practicing clinician to evaluate these studies are provided.
