Patients with lobar or segmental impairment of bile flow or of portal venous blood flow frequently develop considerable atrophy of the area involved, followed by compensatory hypertrophy/hyperplasia of the non-affected parts. This configuration is termed atrophy/hypertrophy complex of the liver.
