The clinical laboratory is essential to the successful and complete evaluation of the patient with hypertension. A reasonably thorough knowledge of the important physiologic components of blood pressure regulation, in conjunction with a good history and physical examination and a simple panel of screening tests serve to detect or rule out the presence of secondary forms of hypertension in the majority of patients.
