Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the pathogen that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), has been isolated in the corneal epithelium of some HIV-positive patients. This observation raises concern about the risk of HIV transmission through corneal transplantation surgery (penetrating keratoplasty).
