A review of cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation in Israel between 1984-1991 is presented. During these 7 years the number of cataract operations increased by 50%, with a significant increase in operations in private hospitals. The proportion of intraocular lens implantations increased from 47% to 93%, predominantly posterior chamber implantations. A rapid transition from intracapsular to extracapsular extraction was documented.
