Current research regarding the elderly clearly shows that a surgical intervention can successfully be performed on elderly patients with only a moderate increase in surgical mortality. Elderly clients require a thorough preoperative assessment by the health care team in order to facilitate a positive perioperative course. The elderly patient is at high risk for infection. Implementation of preventive actions, such as perioperative skin preparation, can effect wound healing in the elderly.
