1995 was proclaimed by UNESCO and by the Pasteur Institute in Paris as the year of L. Pasteur. 1995 is the 100th anniversary of his death. The author of the submitted paper describes the life and work of this genius and at the same time gives an account of the most important contributions of Pasteur's research activities for natural and medical sciences. Pasteur's work is developed further not only in Pasteur's Institute in Paris but also in other research centres worldwide, incl. the Czech and Slovak Republic.
