Control of defaecation after surgical correction of high and intermediate types of congenital anorectal malformations is difficult. The posterior sagittal approach with careful reconstruction of the external sphincter is postulated to give a better outcome than the pull-through operation. The functional results of these procedures performed in one centre were evaluated in order to identify prognostic factors.
