Fresh human milk not only influence the physicochemical conditions in the infant's intestine, but also enhances the in vitro growth of Bifidobacterium Various Bifidobacterium strains belonging to different species can be clearly distinguished by their growth properties with different kinds of milk. Only B. bifidium, the predominant species in the intestine of breast-fed infants, is stimulated by human milk.
