The effect of phosphatidylcholine vesicles (liposomes) on the accumulation of several compounds in choroid plexus of rat brain was studied in vitro. When choroid plexus had been preincubated with liposomes, the accumulation of alpha-aminoisobutyric acid, tyrosine and morphine decreased. However, when choroid plexus had been preincubated with liposomes containing cholesterol, the accumulation of these compounds was not affected. The accumulation of met-enkephalinamide was not affected by preincubation with either liposomes. The results suggest that the effect of liposomes on the accumulation of substances depends on the composition of the liposomes.
