The usefulness of non-equilibrium pH gradient gel electrophoresis combined with SDS gels in a two-dimensional gel system for the resolution of red cell membrane proteins has been demonstrated. Variation in the membrane proteins from normal adults and neonates has been shown, along with initial studies of patients with disorders affecting the red cell membrane. These studies have provided the basis for further studies of the red cell membrane proteins: 1) during development; 2) in hereditary disorders manifested in the properties of the red cell membrane; 3) for polymorphisms of these proteins; and 4) of the coordinate synthesis of various proteins during the maturation of the red cell.
