PIP: About 3/4 of young men and women living in metropolitan areas of the US have had sex education in school and about 8 out of 10 of those who have taken such a course report that they received information about different types of contraceptive methods. About 3/4 of students who have taken a course say that they were taught something about where contraceptive methods can be obtained or about possible side effects of the various methods. Young people who have had sex education are no more likely to have sexual intercourse than those who haven't; however, sexually active young women who have had sex education are less likely to have been pregnant than their counterparts who have had no such instruction. Teenage women who have had sex education are somewhat more likely to have practiced contraception at 1st intercourse but are not any more likely to have used a medically prescribed method such as the pill. Black teenage women, but not whites, who have had instruction about contraceptives are more likely to ever use a prescription method, and a higher proportion of all teenage women who have had such instruction report ever-use of a method than those who have not had such instruction. Young women who have had sex education are neither more nor less likely than those who have not to use a method every time they have intercourse. These findings are based on 2 nationwide US surveys conducted in the mid and late 1970s.
