Tumourous changes of the mamilla and the areola of the breast are rare compared to tumours of the glands of the breast. Although these tumours are rare a large number of possible tumours occur in this area. The differential diagnosis is therefore difficult. A survey of the possible tumours is given in tables and macroscopic pictures. The macroscopic similarity of the adenoma of the mamilla with primary cancer of the mamilla and pagets disease of the mamilla are stressed. The possibility of tumour like swellings which are not neoplastic is described. Among these pseudotumours locally infected conditions are predominant. Any tumour in the mamilla or areola which cannot be diagnosed with certainty must be subjected to microscopic tissue diagnosis.
