Viral, bacterial, and parasitic pulmonary diseases that occur spontaneously in animals used for research can adversely affect the collection and interpretation of data in studies on pulmonary structure and function. Common respiratory infections occurring in a wide range of mammals are summarized, and procedures for detection of spontaneous infectious diseases affecting experimental studies are described.
