The entity paroxysmal vertigo with hearing impairment and tinnitus can be distinguished into six different types, of which only one can be named Ménière's disease. Out of 1474 patients suffering from paroxysmal vertigo only 31% (457) met the requirements set for Ménière's disease. Attention is drawn to the fact that many patients suffer from syndromes partly resembling Ménière's disease but lack one or more of the cardinal symptoms.
