Biochemical and cell biological aspects of synthesis, activation and action of mammalian collagenases are presented and discussed with respect to collagen resorption under normal and pathological conditions. Particularly emphasized are the regulatory mechanisms involved which operate at the level of synthesis of the proenzyme, during activation of the latent enzyme, and by the presence of inhibitors of the active collagenase as well as by substrate specificity for the various collagen types.
