PIP: A study was undertaken to establish the monthly trends in live births, still births, premature births, spontaneous and artificial abortions as well as conceptions in Hungary during the years 1957-1963. Data of 1,025,862 live births, 13,847 still births, 68,260 premature births, 967,625 artificial and 208,233 spontaneous abortions were examined. It was found that live births between February and May exceeded the annual average, while those between October and January did not reach it. Still births proved to be higher between November and April and lower between June and September. Premature births were less frequent from June to October. In cases of spontaneous abortions, no seasonal change was found. Conceptions grew rarer in the late winter and early spring months and became more frequent in the summer months. It is noted that seasonal effects can be considered in family planning.
