Mycoplasma hominis is now recognized as a human pathogen, but little information regarding its antibiotic susceptibility is available. We therefore tested the susceptibility of 49 isolates of M. hominis to 16 antibiotics. Penicillin-like drugs and erythromycin showed no activity whatsoever. Tetracycline and lincomycin were the most active drugs, with chloramphenicol, kanamycin, and streptomycin showing some inhibitory activity. The distinctions between metabolic inhibition, growth inhibition, and mycoplasmacidal endpoints are discussed and defined.
