The load bearing capacity of the lumbar vertebral arches was studied by comparing vertebrae united with screws with those without screws. Load bearing of vertebral arches was about doubled when reinforced by compression screws and reconstructed by good callus formation. This has been confirmed by the postoperative improvement of the load bearing capacity which after complete healing permitted full loading.
