More than 2 years of experience in assaying aminoglycoside antibiotic levels have proved that the appropriate acetyltransferase employed in conjunction with 14C-acetyl co-enzyme A provides rapid, reproducible results (CV = 4+). These results are available before the next administration is due, enabling the clinician to adjust the dose. This is especially indicated if there is impairment of renal function.
