PIP: 250 MCG OF 6-hydroxydopamine, which destroys adrenergic nerve terminals, was injected stereotaxically into the left lateral ventricle of cyclic female rats in estrus. In the morning of the next estrus, 32 of 40 (80%) had not ovulated, compared with 1 of 10 (10%) of vehicle controls. All 4 rats given hydroxydopamine and 10 mcg of purified luteinizing hormone releasing factor (LRF) extract and 10 of 13 (77%) rats stimulated electrically in the median eminence also did not ovulate, showing that the anterior hypophysis was affected by hydroxydopamine. Of 8 rats given the hydroxydopamine and 50 mcg LH, 7 ovulated. Theories of negative feedback and LRF pool size are discussed.
