PIP: The effect of intraperitoneal Rheomacrodex on the postoperative results and rate of pregnancy in cases undergoing tuboplastic surgery was studied in a series of 60 consecutive cases of women undergoing surgery for tubal factor sterility. The cases included 33 cases of primary and 27 cases of secondary sterility; the operative procedures included 23 salpingolyses, 30 salpingostomies, 7 tubo-uterine implantations, and 2 end-to-end anastomases. Rheomacrodex, a substance which covers the traumatized peritoneal area after surgery with a very fine film, silicone-like, to hinder adhesion formation, was administered in 37 cases; 25 other operations were controls. The salpingolysis group had a 52.1% total pregnancy rate with a 30.4% live birth rate. The positive postoperative patency test in this group was 78%. In the salpingostomy group the pregnancy rate was poor (6.6%); whereas patency tests were positive in 53% of cases. No pregnancies occurred in the tubo-uterine implantation group. The overall patency rate for the 3 procedures of salpingostomy was 57%, with a pregnancy rate of 10%. Although the difference between the treated and control cases in terms of tubal patency and pregnancy rates was not striking statistically, in the Rheomacrodex group, a greater number of cases had undergone repeated pelvic surgery, thus putting the group at a disadvantage. However, when repeat surgery cases from cases and controls are compared, there is an indication that administration of low-molecular-weight dextran intraperitoneally at the time of tuboplastic surgery may improve the chances of a successful operation.
