PIP: From 1961-1970 cases of women with fertility disturbances due to anovulatory cycles were studied. 49 of the 65 women had wedgelike resections of their ovaries performed; the rest were treated conservatively, in this case with human gonadotropins and clomiphene. After 2 years, 91% had regular ovulatory cycles and 61% had become pregnant. The low percentage of pregnancies relative to the percentage of successful treatments is believed to be due to: 1) late start in treatment; 2) disturbances, usually sexual, in marital relationships; 3) contemporary hypoplasia of the uterus and fallopian tubes; and 4) secondary inflammatory and tropic changes. It is therefore recommended to: 1) assure early treatment of disturbances of the cycle, 2) investigate marital relationships, 3) effect treatment of genital hypoplasia, and 4) decrease chances of secondary inflammation and tropic changes by proceeding very carefully during the operation.
