PIP: The results of a 3-4 year follow-up, by interview and clinic records, of 189 of a total of 231 16-45 year old women fitted with a Lippes loop between 1968-1969 in Kurunegala, Ceylon, are presented. A majority of the women had a parity of 4 or under at the time of insertion and most were using contraception to limit rather than space their families. The overall retention rate for the group was 71.9% at time of interview; 84.1% after 1 year of use. The initial expulsion rate was 12.1% with about half of the expulsions occurring in the first 3 months of use. 32.8% of the women complained of side effects including bleeding and pain, and 14.8% of the devices were removed. The pregnancy-failure rate during the study was 3.2% with conceptions occurring 9-36 months postinsertion. The expulsion rate appears to be higher (probably due to routine insertion of Lippes loop C3 at the first visit) and the removal rate lower than those rates found in other countries' experience (India and Mauritius) with the loop. It is concluded that the IUD is a satisfactory method of contraception in Ceylon, particularly because of its high continuation rate.
