PIP: The 2nd part of a review of the WHO program in nutrition for the last 7 years is presented. The Protein Advisory Group (PAG) was formed by WHO, FAO, and UNICEF to study the formulation and manufacture of new protein foods and food mixtures. The defined functions and operations of PAG are described. The United Nations General Assembly gave consideration to the protein problem. The essential features of action to avert the protein crisis in developing countries are listed. The WHO research program focuses on studies of the etiology and pathology of nutritional disceases and trials of preventive or therapeutic measures. Former studies and those currently underway are described. Possible lines of future action include: 1) evaluation of past and present activities, 2) standardization of forms for surveillance of nutritional status, 3) cost-benefit studies of alternative strategies, 4) studies on the effect of malnutrition in human development, 5) development of conventional and nonconventional protein foods, 6) food and nutrition policy, 7) manpower studies and intensification of training programs, 8) institutional requirements for national food and nutrition programs, 9) studies on nutrition and family planning, 10) relationship between nutrition and disease, and 11) fortification of foods.
