PIP: Corticosteroids levels in 24-hour urine were studied in 25 premenopausal and 35 postmenopausal women during a Metopiron test. It was found that after menopause, corticosteroid levels, and thus also pituitary ACTH reserve and the liberation of pituitary ACTH, diminish in relation to premenopausal levels. On the basis of 11-DOCS excretion levels, it was concluded that postmenopausal corticosteroid excretion can be influenced much more profoundly by estrogens than is the case before menopause and that the reactivity of the pituitary adrenal cortex cannot be greatly changed by small doses of estrogens.
