PIP: Epidemiological considerations with regard to mortality statistics and incidence rates for cervical cancer are discussed and recent data are summarized. The unresolved problem of the nature of the relationship between cervical dysplasia and carcinoma in situ with invasive cervical cancer is considered. A summary is made of data on time trends in the incidence of cervical cancer and of the details of studies on the biological behavior of cervical carcinoma in situ. Coital/marital and penile factors in the etiology of cervical cancer are reviewed, and the herpesvirus hypothesis is evaluated in light of methodological considerations. Finally, a major new collaborative prospective test of the herpesvirus hypothesis is proposed.
