PIP: A morphological study of the effects of injectable medroxyprogesterone acetate, chlormadinone acetate, norethisterone enanthate, or deladroxate on the ovaries and mammary glands of 52 women is presented. The lack of evidence of ovulation and corpora lutea formation was confirmed by low urinary pregnanediol excretion levels. The luteinized follicles showed no evidence of 3beta-hydroxysteroid or 20alph-hydroxysteroid activity of enzymatic dehydrogenases. There were no marked histological changes observed in the follicles, cortex, stroma, and corpora albicantia. No significant evidence of fibrosis was found, though there were various degrees of concentration of connective tissue. 80 of 105 patients for whom data were available became pregnant after discontinuing treatment. No mammary pathology or tumors were detected in 600 patients treated with either medroxyprogesterone acetate or chlormadinone acetate.
