Lacunes are small infarcts in the deep structures of the cerebral hemispheres and in the brain stem. They account for approximately 20 percent of all ischemic strokes, and usually occur in patients with chronic hypertension. The well-defined vascular changes and clinical pictures are described, as well as the principles of diagnosis and therapeutical management.
