The level of the tumor marker tissue polypeptide Antigen (TPA) rises distinctly after a surgical trauma. The rise begins between 3 and 6 days after operation; the elevation lasts for more than 6 weeks. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) shows no comparable reaction.
