PIP: A program to train doctors in microsurgical tubal anastomosis was conducted by Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. There were 8 trainees selected who had training in obstetrics gynecology, general surgery or urology, and were interested in microsurgical reanastomosis of the fallopian tubes. The course consisted of lectures on microsurgery and lab work, lecture on structure and physiology of normal fallopian tubes, selection of patients for this procedure, use of operating microscopes, laboratory practice using rate and rabbit uteri, and observation in actual human surgery. The students were tested by writing and observation during lab work. They would also be evaluated after they returned to their institutions to do the work. The average age for patients is 31.85 years and the duration of infertility was 44.8 months. The justification for doing tubal reanastomosis was remarriage 84%, and death of children 16%. These women had not been sterilized by electrocautery, but by Pomeroy's technique. The pregnancy rate was 76.9% 36 months after the surgery. The need for renastomosis is critical where massive sterilization programs have been used.
