The effects of vasectomy on seminal viscosity, volume and pH have been investigated in freshly emitted semen of 21 healthy men before operation and three months later. Viscosity and the pH range were decreased significantly, but the decrease of the seminal volume was not significant. Reasons of changes have been discussed.

PIP: Semen samples, taken from 21 men prior to their having vasectomies and 3 months after the vasectomies were performed, were compared in terms of pH level, viscosity, and volume. The level of pH decreased from 7.38 to 7.14 following vasectomy and there was an insignificant decrease in semen volume from 4.16 to 4.02. These findings (p = 0.001) support the contention that the volume of semen originating in the testis, efferent ducts and epididymis is very small compared to the volume originating in the prostate and seminal vesicles, but that the secretions from the former regions have a higher pH level compared to those from the latter regions. Viscosity, due to a lack of spermatozoa, decreased from 3.76 to 2.58 following vasectomy. A table presenting seminal viscosity, pH, and volume before and after vasectomy is included.
