The potential of computers to assist veterinarians in medical management is reviewed. It is argued that computers will contribute to improved patient care by solving the information retrieval and processing problems in medicine. Strategies to accomplish this goal are discussed in detail, and criteria for evaluating diagnostic information systems are proposed.
