With the technological revolution in medicine that occurred between the two World Wars came awarness of a need for an ophthalmic institution that would combine clinical and basic scientific research, professional training, and patient services. The history of the Institute of Ophthalmology of the University of London is reviewed by Sir Stewart Duke-Elder, who was instrumental in the foundation and development of the Institute and who currently serves as its President.
