A comprehensive survey of the subject is given. Focal points are the discussions of calcium antagonists, pathophysiology of vasospasm and CBF-monitoring. Moreover, a novel neuromonitor is presented permitting bed-side work. In spite of the still unclarified etiology of vasospasm and the site of action of the calcium antagonists their early application is indicated for the prevention of cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid haemorrhage.
