PIP: Induced abortions among women 15-19 years old shows strong geographical differences within Norway. The fewest abortions were done in the Aust-Agder region with 13/1000 women (1986). Oslo is highest with an annual rate of about 40/1000 abortions. This implies that 1 woman in 5 in Oslo will undergo an abortion before reaching 20 years old. There has been no decrease in the number of abortions from 1985 through the 1st half of 1987 in Oslo. The fact that the abortion rate has not decreased in spite of an intensive educational campaign in the schools promoting contraception may indicate that the campaign has achieved more influence on opinion than on behavior. A possible alternative explanation may be that young people are using condoms more, although this is a less effective means of contraception. The constant rate of abortions can also be interpreted as an expression that abortion has become a relatively broadly accepted means of contraception, especially in the Oslo area.
