The gross and microscopic anatomy of the extraocular muscles, including their sensory and motor innervation, is reviewed. Embryological and developmental sequences, as well as cellular and molecular aspects, are presented, and differences between species and muscles are discussed in relation to the constituent muscle fiber types.
