PIP: The efficacy of the triphasic contraceptive agent trisistone-R was evaluated in 31 married women (20 to 40 years old) during a total of 342 menstrual cycles. Of 31 women, 1 was childless, 13 had 1 child, and 17 had 2 or more children; 13 women had a history of 1 abortion, 10 had 2 abortions, and 3 had 3 or more abortions. Duration of the menstrual cycle was 21-31 days and duration of menses was 3-8 days. The first phase consisted of 6 violet tablets containing 0.003 mg of ethynyl estradiol and 0.05 mg of levonorgestrel, the second phase consisted 6 pink tablets containing 0.04 mg of ethynyl estradiol and 0.075 mg of levonorgestrel and third phase consisted of 9 orange tablets containing 0.03 mg of ethynyl estradiol and 0.125 mg of levonorgestrel. The women were taking trisistone-R for 21 days followed by a 5-7-day rest period and menstruation. The next cycle started after the end of menstruation. All women tolerated trisistone-R extremely well. Two women experienced mild nausea and slight changes in the duration of the menstrual cycle. Three women developed a 12-16-day delay in the onset of menses. Of 31 women using trisistone-R, only 1 became pregnant.
