HIV infection in women is a problem of growing magnitude and concern in the United States. Midwives, as primary care women's health care providers, must be fully informed about the scope of HIV infection in women in order to provide appropriate education and care to their patients. This article reviews the epidemiology and transmission of HIV infection as they pertain to women including issues of perinatal and breast milk transmission. The natural history of vertically acquired pediatric HIV infection is also discussed.
