Infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis are wide-spread, costly, and damaging. Consequences are harshest for women because of the adverse effects on the reproductive system. Newborns of infected mothers may also be affected. Screening of sexually active patients is important, because many infected patients are asymptomatic. Newer, improved laboratory techniques are available. Treatment with doxycycline, tetracycline, or erythromycin is preferred. Simultaneous treatment of sexual partners is vital.
