Anterior knee pain is caused by a number of distinct conditions which can only be diagnosed accurately by arthroscopy. Chondromalacia patellae is an important cause of disability in young people which rarely progresses to osteoarthritis. Treatment is by non-operative quadriceps strengthening exercises or by conservative surgery combined with careful supervised rehabilitation.
