The otolaryngologist is often asked to participate in the evaluation for possible surgical intervention in patients with sleep-related breathing disorders. The information from polysomnography performed in a sleep laboratory is often helpful in choosing among different treatment options. The relationship of the otolaryngologist to the sleep laboratory can range from medical director with overall responsibility for operation of the facility to referring physician with only a superficial involvement and is determined by complex local factors unique to the physician and the community he serves.
