Endothelin plays a role in the regulation of vascular tonus. Therefore, it has been hypothesized that increased production or release of endothelin or both may contribute to the pathogenesis of hypertension. To assess any changes in the plasma endothelin concentration in essential hypertension, plasma immunoreactive endothelin concentrations were measured in patients with essential hypertension.
