Altogether 55 patients of the elderly and senile age with chronic cerebrovascular insufficiency underwent neuropsychological examinations according to A. R. Luria's techniques. Based on the volumetric CT-parameters the patients were distributed into 4 groups: with minimum atrophic alterations, external, internal and mixed types of cerebral atrophy (CA). The most pronounced disorders of higher cerebral functions were revealed in patients with the internal and mixed types of CA. The characteristic feature of the neuropsychological disorders in the examined patients with dementia was the domination of the signs of frontal brain dysfunction. The data obtained attest to the leading part of the pathology of profound structures of the brain and their relations to the frontal parts in the genesis of the neurological and neuropsychological disorders in elderly and senile patients with chronic cerebrovascular insufficiency.
