Medical education for future practice is addressed with the use of a narrative from the obstetric field. Medical expertise is present within the health care teams described. Due to inappropriate use of hierarchy and insufficient team work knowledge is not effectively being shared. A plea is made for a reappraisal of generic competencies in medical education and training.
