To detect mortality predicting parameters, a prospective study was done at Hospital Rawson (HR) and Hospital Aeronáutico (HA). 104 male and female patients (P) randomly selected were nutritionally evaluated on admission and weekly during one month. 35 healthy individuals were also studied as controls (C). Student's test, AOV and X2 were used. Mid arm circumference cm (MAC), serum albumin g% (SA) and absolute lymphocyte count/mm3 (ALC) with values that were found to correlate (p less than 0.05), were used as predicting parameters. A prognostic nutritional index (PNI) was done, square root of ALC+(SA x MAC), Mean +/- SD: HR male P MAC 25.73 +/- 3.93 vs C 28.91 +/- 1.35 (p less than 0.05). (HA) male P MAC 27.11 +/- 3.12 vs C (p less than 0.05). HR P SA 3.33 +/- 0.70 vs HR C 4.80 +/- 0.47 (p less than 0.000001). HA P SA 2.88 +/- 0.45 vs C 3.76 +/- 0.22 (p less than 0.000001). HR P ALC 1498 +/- 741 vs C 2514 +/- 766 (p less than 0.01). HA P 2041 +/- 719 vs C (p less than 0.01). Male C PNI was 186 +/- 26 and female C was 158 +/- 16. Patients on admission, were divided into category A) PNI greater than or equal to 117 and B) PNI less than or equal to 116. The mortality rate of A patients was null and in the B group it was 12.20% (p less than 0.02) at the end of the study. The results obtained strongly suggest that nutritional support has to be considered on P of the high risk group.
