The referral pattern was examined in 140 patients with oral mucosal lesions, who were referred to the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Free University Hospital, Amsterdam. It was shown, that dentists were consulted as often as general physicians. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that general physicians referred patients with oral mucosal lesions frequently to other medical specialists, rather than to the dentist or the oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
