Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a stress-related mental disorder caused by experience of a traumatic event. PTSD is often accompanied by morphological and functional changes in the hippocampus. Recently, it was reported that the hippocampal volumes of PTSD patients are relatively low. However, the mechanisms that cause such atrophy are not well understood. Single prolonged stress (SPS) is one of the animal models proposed for PTSD. The aim of this study was to reveal whether hippocampal neuronal apoptosis and the expression of apoptosis-related protein and gene occur and investigate behavioral and electrophysiological changes of hippocampi in SPS rats.
