Prolonged exposure to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI) is known to be associated with lactic acidosis (LA) and hepatosteatosis. However, perinatal exposure to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and the subsequent development of symptomatic LA in infants, although recognised, is rarely reported in developing countries.
