Grave's disease and autoimmune hypothyroidism represent the two main autoimmune thyroid diseases, where an immune response is directed against the thyroid gland. The essence of these diseases is loss of tolerance of own tissues caused by malfunction of the T lymphocytes, which effect the production of antibodies reacting with particular cell structures and tissues. Cytokines participate in the induction and effector phase of the immune and inflammatory response and therefore play a critical role in the development of autoimmune thyroid diseases. Regulatory T cells take part in regulation of immune response and play a leading role in developing immune tolerance through active suppression.
